ALBERTA TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Banff National Park was the first national park in Canada. Hot springs & the stunning mountain scenery of the superb Canadian Rockies have made Banff National Park with its 6,000 + square kilometres Canada's top tourist attraction. In this wilderness the dangerous wildlife wolves & grizzly bears is to be found.
Banff National Park's natural and cultural monuments are so important that they are protected by UNESCO.
Banff, some 4600 ft above sea-level, famous for its hot springs, is the only town in the park. The many outdoor adventures include mountain hiking, horseback trekking, river rafting & canoeing .Excavations at Vermilion Lakes near Banff showed evidence of human settlement some 11,000 years ago . The native Indian tribes Stoney , Kootenay & Blackfoot were indigenous prior to European settlement. In the extreme north of Alberta, the Wood Buffalo National Park, set up to save the bison now contains the world's largest bison herd ! A great success for all involved. Wood Buffalo National Park is also Canada's largest park & the only natural nesting site of the whooping crane.
