NIAGARA FALLS TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
The Niagara Falls are located on the border of Ontario & New York State. Niagara Falls is a township on the Ontario side of the Falls.
Glacial erosion formed the Niagara Falls some 20,000 years ago as the glaciers retreated at the end of the last ice age.
Annie Taylor in 1901 was the first person to go over the falls. Her mode of transport was an airtight wooden barrel. She hoped to become rich but died in poverty.
In 1911, Bobby Leach broke his jaw & kneecaps when he tried it in a steel barrel!
Charles G. Stephens died in 1920 tried it in a wooden barrel weighted down with an anvil.
There have been several really bizarre efforts over the years:
In 1995 Robert Overcracker unsuccessfully rode a jetski over the Falls. His body was never recovered.
Kirk Jones in 2003 swam over! His friend was meant to video the feat but too many cans of beer got in the way. The beer helped relax Kirk who survived !
The Falls are a popular choice for suicide attempts - some 20 people are successful every year.
On a happier note, Niagara Falls is one of the honeymoon capitals of the world when the tradition started there in 1801. Nowadays some 50,000 Niagara Honeymoons are taken there every year.
For those lovers of trivia, the severe winter of 1848 resulted in the Niagara Falls's flow ceasing completely for the first & only time as Lake Erie iced up.
The Niagara Falls is a very famous Canadian & Ontario attraction .
