Europeans first settled on Prince Edward Island where Fort Amherst now stands. This Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site provides details the history of the settlement. Port-la-Joye was established by the French in 1720 in the land of native Mi'kmaq. The British conquered it in 1758 & deported the French speakers.
