IRISH ROOTS : IRISH WAR DEAD

The Mayo Irish War Dead from the World Wars have recently been commemorated with a Mayo World War Memorial in the Mayo Memorial Peace Park. The Memorial was opened by the President of Ireland Mary McAleese in October 2008 . The memorial contains the names of 1,114 Mayo men who have died in World War I, World War II & subsequent conflicts. Further names are being added on discovery, the most recent being Marine Robert McKibben RM. who lost his life in Afghanistan in November 2008. The Mayo World War Memorial came about through the efforts of Michael Feeney, who is now the Chairman of the Mayo Peace Park committee, who wanted to Honour the Fallen Mayo Men.

The Mayo World War Memorial also commemorates the fallen Mayo men from United Nations operations, Korea, Vietnam & Afghanistan wars as well as World War I, World War II ..

Some 63,000 Irishmen and women killed in combat during two world wars.
