National Historic Trails in California :

The California National Historic Trail commemorates the route travelled in the 1840's by people from all over America, & many from overseas, who flocked to California to dig for Gold! It is estimated that over 250,000 prospectors travelled overland to California to try & make their fortune. The route they travelled is now commemorated by the California National Historic Trail. Wheels ruts can still be seen along the Trail. The Gold Rush precipitated the largest relocation of people in America's history. It is little wonder that California State has the highest population in the US.

Around the time of the American War of Independence ,  Spanish Captain Juan Bautista de Anza was founding San Francisco ! He pioneered the 1200 mile long route in 1775 from New Spain To San Francisco. The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail links Nogales in Arizona to San Francisco.

Old Spanish National Historic Trail journeys through California linking Santa Fe to Los Angeles. A Mexican trader Antonio Armijo in 1829 pioneered the route to deliver goods to the Los Angeles . Santa Fe developed into the trade centre for commerce between Mexico and United States. The Old Spanish National Historic Trail flourished until 1848 whereupon other routes developed as the United States expanded westward.

The Oregon National Historic Trail - California
Gold rush adventurers, fur traders & religious folk all travelled the 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail en route to the Pacific & a new life. From Independence in Missouri to the California, what a feat in 1843

Pony Express National Historic Trail ends in Sacramento California. The1,800 miles journey from St. Joseph Missouri took just ten days! It helped the Union align itself with California before the Civil War broke out. It only operated for 18 months & in October 1861 the telegraph took over. There are 120 historic sites en route.
